When the map of your life dissolves

Richard Banfield and Devon McDonald on what actually happens in the middle, and why most self-help cannot help.

A dashed route that fragments into scattered dots

At some point, usually in your forties, sometimes earlier if a crisis forces it, the map stops working. The route you were on, the one that brought you here, no longer leads anywhere you want to go. But the new map has not arrived. You are, briefly, unmapped.

This is the territory Richard and Devon work in. It is also where most self-help fails, because it sells a destination instead of a practice of being lost.

Three things that actually help

  • Community of people in the same weather, not people who have figured it out.
  • Physical practice: walking, cold water, something that returns you to the body.
  • Smaller stakes for a while. Lower the bar on your “output” so you can raise it on your attention.
You can’t think your way out of unmapped terrain. You can only walk through it.
